House prosecutors concentrate impeachment on Article II alleging Vice President Duterte's hidden wealth
House prosecutors have dismissed three of four impeachment articles against Vice President Sara Duterte, focusing solely on Article II, which accuses her of unexplained wealth.
In a recent news forum in Quezon City, House prosecutor Joel Chua announced that the impeachment panel has abandoned three of the four charges against Vice President Sara Duterte, leaving only Article II on alleged undisclosed wealth. He explained that this single article is the easiest for citizens to grasp. Fellow prosecutor Gerville Luistro echoed the "all-in" strategy, while the defense counsel Sheila Sison said the change will not alter the defense's evidence presentation.
The three dismissed articles involved confidential fund misuse, bribery, and an alleged assassination plot. Evidence from the Anti-Money Laundering Council, banks, insurers, and accountant Alexander Cabrera suggested the vice president and her spouse possess between P817 million and P1.5 billion of unexplained assets. Prosecutors anticipate the Senate impeachment trial to wrap up by the end of November or the first week of December.
Why it matters
The narrowed impeachment focus could speed the Senate trial and shape public perception of the vice president's alleged corruption.
