Houthis claim Saudi over‑50 attacks as they seize Mocha, Mayun Island and strike Sharurah base

Houthi fighters have taken the Red Sea port city of Mocha and the island of Mayun, extending their presence to the Bab al‑Mandeb strait. The group says it hit the Saudi Sharurah military installation in the Jazan region with drones and missiles, damaging structures and injuring two people. Houthis also allege that Saudi forces carried out more than 50 attacks on Houthi targets in a 24‑hour period.

Saudi air raids have struck Houthi positions in Saada province and fired artillery into the border district of Monabbih, while Saudi civil‑defence alerts for Abha and Khamis Mushait were issued and then quickly withdrawn. The fighting has displaced tens of thousands of residents and prompted over 2,000 Yemenis to cross into Djibouti for aid.

How this was covered

  • Right-leaning outlets covered this 5h later
  • Left-leaning coverage is the most divided on this story

Why it matters

Control of key Red Sea points and the escalation of attacks threaten vital shipping lanes and regional security.

How the sides frame it

HIGH AGREEMENT

All camps report the Houthi seizure of islands and coastal positions that tighten control over the Bab al-Mandeb/Red Sea shipping lane and raise oil-supply concerns, but left-leaning coverage stresses the shift in regional power balance and Iran’s strategic leverage, centrist coverage highlights the tightening grip on a key oil route, and right-leaning coverage foregrounds the threat to oil prices and the strategic dilemma for the United States.

LEFT

The Houthi gains turn a local battle into a contest for control of a vital maritime chokepoint, boosting Iran’s leverage and reshaping regional power dynamics.

CENTER

The seizure of Greater and Lesser Hanish islands and nearby coastal points tightens the Houthis’ grip on a major Red Sea oil-shipping corridor.

RIGHT

The offensive creates a serious threat to global oil supplies and gives the United States a new strategic problem as the Houthis gain leverage over Iran.

The left emphasises

  • “turns a local battle into a contest for control of one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints”
  • “potentially allowing the Houthis to threaten commercial vessels and warships”
  • “Iran welcomes the development as it adds leverage”

The right emphasises

  • “threaten oil prices”
  • “creates a major new problem for U.S. President Trump”
  • “gives Tehran potential leverage over both of the region’s main oil-shipping corridors”
