How Greece's upcoming vote could reshape New Democracy's leadership and coalition prospects

Analysts say the next Greek election will decide whether New Democracy can govern alone or must form a coalition, and whether Kyriakos Mitsotakis will retain party leadership.

Recent opinion polls place New Democracy's support between 23% and 25%, below the level required for the 20-seat bonus granted to parties that exceed 25% of the vote. Mitsotakis has warned that a result at or below this mark could endanger his position as party leader. At the same time, ELAS, led by Alexis Tsipras, appears poised to claim the role of official opposition, though PASOK under Nikos Androulakis remains a contender for the second-largest bloc.

A new party founded by Antonis Samaras is expected to draw votes from New Democracy, potentially weakening its parliamentary strength further. The election outcome will therefore determine not only the governing configuration—whether a single-party cabinet or a coalition is required—but also the future of Mitsotakis' leadership within New Democracy.

Why it matters

The election will decide Greece's governing majority and could trigger a leadership change in the ruling party.
