Hundreds Still Missing a Month After Nepal Floods, Including 33 Britons

Catastrophic floods on the Nepal-Tibet border on 26 August devastated the Bhote Koshi River basin, killing at least 1,453 people and leaving more than 6,000 individuals unaccounted for. Among the missing are 33 British nationals, 80 Americans, over 50 Ukrainians and citizens of Australia and India, most presumed swept away by massive waves that destroyed villages in Rasuwa and Nuwakot. Nepal’s disaster management agency has identified only 112 bodies after DNA testing, while 1,333 recovered remains await identification.

Approximately 33,000 residents are displaced, many living in temporary shelters, and the floods have crippled the country’s hydropower projects, a key economic driver. Prime Minister Balendra Shah highlighted the event at the UN as a climate-change warning and urged greater global support, while aid groups warn further rains could trigger landslides that hinder relief efforts.
