Hungarian government plans to double family allowance starting 2027

Prime Minister Magyar Peter announced that the family allowance will be doubled from 2027, while the number of beneficiary families has been falling for years.

During a Monday address to the Országgyűlés, Prime Minister Magyar Peter presented the upcoming 2027 budget, highlighting a plan to double the family allowance. The allowance, which has been effectively frozen since 2008, currently averages roughly 284-287 thousand forints per family per month. Historical data show a modest rise in 2008, after which the amount remained stable for years.

Meanwhile, the number of families receiving the benefit has steadily declined from around 1.25 million in the early 2000s to just above 1 million today, leading to a nominal reduction in total government outlays. The proposed doubling aims to raise the monthly support to about 630 thousand forints per family if it had kept pace with inflation since the last increase.

Why it matters

The change will significantly raise monthly income for families that rely on the allowance, affecting millions of households.
