IEA urges faster diesel stock releases as market remains tightly balanced through 2027

The International Energy Agency forecasts that the diesel market will stay tightly balanced at least until 2027, a view echoed by its latest analysis that predicts a decline in global oil use this year. In a letter to members ahead of its Oct. 15 Governing Board meeting, the agency asked countries that have not yet met their pledged emergency reserves to prioritize diesel deliveries and to outline any additional drawdowns they could offer.

The appeal comes as recent attacks on civilian and energy infrastructure in Saudi Arabia are cited in the agency’s communications, and as diesel prices continue to pressure consumers and businesses worldwide. Integrated refiners such as TotalEnergies, Marathon Petroleum, Valero Energy and Phillips 66 have reported higher margins and increased market capitalisation amid the shortage, while the IEA stresses the need for coordinated releases to ease price pressures.

Why it matters

Tight diesel supplies keep fuel prices high, affecting transport costs, food prices and everyday expenses for households.

How this story developed

  1. Sep 24 Gulf oil exporters use alternate routes to sustain supply amid Iran conflict
  2. Oct 5 A U.S. naval blockade has caused a backlog of hundreds of trucks at the Gürbulak crossing, with waits up to five days.
  3. Oct 8 A tanker north of Qatar was hit by multiple projectiles, causing casualties.
  4. Oct 10 According to the Revolutionary Guard, the vessel hit a mine and burst into flames while transiting the Hormuz Strait. The flag of the ship has not been identified. The incident follows a series of recent attacks on vessels in the Persian Gulf, including Iran's claim that it shot at a tanker using an "illegal channel." The flare-up has contributed to a rise in global oil prices and renewed worries about the security of one of the world’s key oil transit routes.
  5. Oct 14 Iran’s security chief publicly named the US‑UAE night‑shuttle as a specific target.
  6. Oct 14 Iran announced a revised method for targeting vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
  7. Oct 14 The International Energy Agency says worldwide oil consumption will fall this year, and diesel supplies will remain constrained through 2027.
  8. Oct 15 The IEA sent a letter urging member countries to accelerate diesel stock releases ahead of its Oct. 15 board meeting.
