Ilhan Omar says she will leave Washington home after federal raid

Rep. Ilhan Omar announced she will move out of her Washington residence after a Homeland Security Investigations raid tied to an immigration inquiry.

Ilhan Omar, a Democratic representative from Minnesota, disclosed that she and her family will relocate from their Washington, D.C., home after federal agents conducted a raid there on Oct. 12. The operation, carried out by Homeland Security Investigations, lasted four to five hours and included as many as 25 agents. Investigators are probing claims that Omar or her father misrepresented her birth year on immigration documents to secure citizenship when her family fled Somalia in the late 1990s. Omar said the agents behaved largely decently during the search. She also noted that her address has been made public and she has been subjected to death threats, prompting the decision to find new housing for her children and other family members.

Why it matters

The raid and Omar's move highlight the political fallout of a high-profile immigration investigation.
