Ilie Bolojan admits conciliatory coalition strategy fell short of reform goals
Former premier Ilie Bolojan said his attempt to govern through dialogue with coalition partners did not deliver the promised reforms.
Ilie Bolojan, former prime minister and current PNL president, reflected on his conciliatory approach to managing a four-party coalition, saying it failed to produce the expected reforms. He drew on his background in Oradea, where he worked with UDMR and PSD, and argued that national governance proved far more complex, with negotiated decisions later contradicted in the media. Bolojan stressed that any public-sector restructuring entails political and social costs and accused PSD of promising higher living standards without required effort.
He added that repeated unmet promises to the European Commission eroded Romania’s credibility, especially after the 2025 presidential election heightened EU pressure on deficit reduction. Finally, he warned that budget balance cannot be achieved instantly through spending cuts alone, citing lengthy legal and administrative procedures.
Why it matters
The remarks reveal why Romania’s coalition struggled to implement reforms and maintain EU credibility.
