Independence advocates call for summit to define day-one guarantees for Scotland
A faction of the independence movement has asked the SNP, Scottish Greens, Believe in Scotland and the Scottish Currency Group to meet and agree on a common set of guarantees for an independent Scotland.
Leading figures from a newly formed independence faction have written to the SNP, Scottish Greens, Believe in Scotland and the Scottish Currency Group, seeking a joint summit to craft a unified list of "day one guarantees" for an independent Scotland. The faction, created at the SNP conference in Aberdeen and comprising SNP members Toni Giugliano, David Birkett, Alan Petrie and Ruth Ritchie, says voters still have unanswered fundamental questions twelve years after the referendum.
They want the meeting to produce a common message on how independence would affect everyday life, covering topics such as the choice of currency, pension safeguards and mortgage protections. The letter warns that without credible answers, the public cannot be expected to make another leap of faith. It calls for a shared memorandum of understanding that would serve as a new social contract with the Scottish people. Tim Rideout, convenor of the Scottish Currency Group, expressed willingness to join the roundtable, noting the timing coincides with the release of the Laurentjoye Report on the Scottish currency.
Why it matters
Clarifying concrete benefits and protections is crucial for gaining public support for any future Scottish independence referendum.
