Scottish Currency Group proposes immediate Scottish pound for a post-independence economy
The Scottish Currency Group will release a 160-page report outlining how an independent Scotland could launch its own currency on day one of independence.
At a Dunfermline conference, the Scottish Currency Group will unveil a detailed 160-page plan for an immediate Scottish pound following independence. Led by Professor Thibault Laurentjoye, the proposal claims a dedicated currency would enable a national central bank to manage liquidity and operate a floating exchange rate, offering advantages over sterlingisation or euro membership. The report addresses practical issues including converting existing contracts, handling foreign-exchange reserves and leveraging Scotland’s energy sector to support the new currency.
It calls on the SNP, Scottish Greens and other independence advocates to incorporate the plan into their economic strategies. The group argues that resolving currency uncertainty is essential for a credible independence transition. The presentation will be followed by a panel discussion on implementation challenges.
Why it matters
A clear currency plan could shape the economic viability of a future independent Scotland.
