India and US move toward finalising trade pact as talks enter fine-tuning phase

Trade Minister Piyush Goyal said most discussions on the India-US bilateral trade agreement are finished and the parties are now polishing the final text.

During a visit to the Netherlands, Trade Minister Piyush Goyal told a business forum that the majority of talks on the India-US bilateral trade agreement are concluded and the focus has shifted to fine-tuning the text. The pact, unveiled in February, sets out a framework for the first phase, addressing tariffs, non-tariff obstacles and digital trade, with India agreeing to ease restrictions on US medical devices and information-communication technology imports.

Shifts in the US tariff regime and a recent Supreme Court decision have spurred additional negotiations, allowing either side to adjust its commitments should the other change tariffs. Goyal previously met US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer at the G20 Trade Ministerial in Milwaukee and later led a team that held talks in Washington. The Indian delegation, comprising about 100 firms and startups, will also engage Dutch ministers and tour the Port of Rotterdam as part of a broader business outreach.
