India's Asian Games gold haul drops from 28 to 10, sparking concerns
India has won just 10 gold medals at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, a steep decline from the 28 it captured in Hangzhou three years ago.
Three years after India’s historic 28-gold haul at the Hangzhou Asian Games, the country has secured merely 10 gold medals at one outlet Aichi-Nagoya edition. All seven shooting golds, six athletics golds and the majority of individual archery titles from Hangzhou have been lost, leaving Neeru Dhanda’s women’s trap victory as the only individual gold so far. Team events such as men’s and women’s kabaddi, three compound archery team titles and women’s cricket have been successfully defended, while men’s hockey and cricket remain in contention for gold.
India’s overall medal count now exceeds 60, placing it eighth overall behind China’s 154 golds. The stark reduction highlights challenges in converting a record-breaking cycle into sustained continental dominance.
Why it matters
The drop reveals difficulties for India in maintaining its recent Asian Games success and may affect future sports funding and strategy.
