India closes in on fourth place as wrestler Aman Sehrawat wins gold

Aman Sehrawat's wrestling gold lifted India to 20 golds and 82 total medals at the Asian Games, leaving the nation one title short of overtaking Uzbekistan for fourth place.

On Saturday, Aman Sehrawat defeated a North Korean opponent 11-7 to claim the men’s freestyle 57kg wrestling gold at the Asian Games 2026, bringing India’s gold total to 20 and its overall medal count to 82. This leaves India just one gold away from matching Uzbekistan’s 21 golds and moving into fourth place in the standings. The day also featured Kumkum Mohod winning the women’s individual recurve archery gold, Pranavi Urs earning India’s first women’s individual golf gold, and the men’s cricket team beating Pakistan to retain its title.

The women’s golf trio of Urs, Aditi Ashok and Diksha Dagar secured silver, while Neeraj Chauhan added a bronze in men’s individual recurve archery. India’s men’s hockey side will face Malaysia later for the gold medal and a direct qualification spot for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. China continues to lead the table, followed by Japan and South Korea.

Why it matters

The medals keep India near the top of the Asian Games table and influence Olympic qualification prospects.
