Indian national indicted in Minnesota for allegedly voting as a non-citizen

Mukeshkumar Somabhai Chaudhari, 39, was indicted by a Minnesota federal grand jury for allegedly misrepresenting his citizenship status to vote in the 2024 general election. According to a Justice Department release, he signed the required voter signature certificate and cast a ballot on November 5, 2024. Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon emphasized that the government will pursue those who knowingly lie about citizenship to vote.

The indictment follows earlier state perjury and voting-violation charges, and Chaudhari reportedly claimed he only learned he should not have voted after consulting his lawyer during a green-card process. Election-fraud groups cited the case to challenge Democratic assertions that non-citizen voting is virtually nonexistent, while the Minnesota Secretary of State reiterated that ineligible voting is "extremely rare" and carries severe penalties.
