Indonesia intensifies diplomatic push for 2029-2030 UN Security Council seat

Ahead of a scheduled launch at the 81st UN General Assembly, Indonesia is stepping up its campaign to secure a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2029-2030 term. Foreign Minister Sugiono told reporters that the government has been meeting bilaterally with a range of states, seeking their endorsement. He noted that some of those nations have indicated willingness to support Jakarta’s bid, but declined to name them pending the official start of the campaign.

The outreach aims to position Indonesia as a voice for the Global South within the UN’s most powerful body. The campaign’s formal kickoff will occur on Friday in New York, alongside the General Assembly’s proceedings. Indonesia hopes the effort will reflect a broader call for the Security Council to better mirror contemporary global power dynamics.
