Indonesia marks two years of Prabowo administration with self-sufficiency in eight key food items

The Prabowo government says it now produces enough rice, corn, sugar, chilies, eggs, chicken meat and shallots to meet domestic demand, ending rice imports.

The Prabowo administration celebrated reaching self-sufficiency in eight staple commodities, including rice, corn, sugar and key vegetables, allowing it to stop importing rice for domestic use. The government credits measures such as price guarantees for paddy and corn, expanded access to subsidised fertilizers and a 20 percent reduction in fertilizer retail prices that took effect in October 2025. Bulog, the state logistics agency, said its rice stockpile stands at roughly 4.55 million metric tons.

Statistics Indonesia recorded the farmer exchange rate at 131.11 in September 2026, up from 120.30 two years earlier, indicating stronger purchasing power for farmers. Additional initiatives, like the Red and White Village Cooperatives and Red and White Fishing Villages, are being rolled out to reinforce food security and support agricultural and fisheries communities.

Why it matters
