Indonesia to upgrade over 200 museums and heritage sites in 2026
The Indonesian government announced a program to refurbish more than 200 museums, forts, palaces and other cultural sites in 2026, adding digital displays and staff training.
During Indonesia Museum Day, State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya outlined a 2026 initiative to revamp more than 200 cultural venues across the archipelago. The scheme targets museums, heritage sites, royal and state palaces, and forts, focusing on both structural repairs and enhanced exhibition narratives. Digital tools and interactive experiences will be introduced to attract younger visitors and deepen understanding of Indonesia’s history.
The program also includes professional development for museum managers to improve operations and tourism services. President Prabowo highlighted the importance of safeguarding cultural heritage as a source of pride and a driver of economic activity for local communities. The government hopes the upgrades will make cultural sites more vibrant, accessible, and educational for all Indonesians.
