Indonesia trims gas pipeline shipments to Singapore, says cut complies with contract

Indonesia reduced its pipeline gas exports to Singapore by 31 BBTUD, an eight-percent cut, and the Energy Minister says the reduction is within the terms of the bilateral sales agreement.

On October 24, Indonesia lowered its piped gas deliveries to Singapore by 31 BBTUD, equivalent to an eight-percent reduction of the overall 409 MMSCFD flow. Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia explained that the cut, split between 15 BBTUD from Natuna and 16 BBTUD from Sumatra, remains within the contractual allowance of 91-92 BBTUD permitted under the bilateral agreement. The reduction does not affect the roughly 146 LNG cargoes Indonesia still supplies to Singapore.

Domestic considerations, including declining output from wells that feed local industry and the state utility PLN, prompted the adjustment. Singapore's Energy Market Authority said the cut represents less than two percent of its total daily gas requirement and will assess legal remedies. Singapore's Energy, Trade and Industry Minister Tan See Leng and Prime Minister Lawrence Wong both stressed the importance of honoring contract obligations.

Why it matters

The cut tests the resilience of Indonesia-Singapore energy ties and could affect regional gas markets.
