Interim Finance Minister reports record oversubscription in state bond auction
Interim Finance Minister Alexandru Nazare said investor demand for a new three-year Romanian bond auction was roughly five times the amount offered.
Interim Finance Minister Alexandru Nazare disclosed that investor interest in the latest three-year state bond auction was about five times higher than the amount the Treasury put up for sale. The Ministry allocated roughly half of the total demand, achieving an average yield of 6.81%, which is lower than prevailing secondary-market rates. Nazare highlighted that this level of oversubscription is the strongest recorded since the start of the year, prior to the deterioration of the international geopolitical environment in February.
He also reported a broad decline in yields on Romanian securities today, with reductions of ten to fifteen basis points for lei-denominated bonds and five to fifteen basis points for euro and dollar-denominated issues, depending on maturity. The minister framed these movements as a positive signal, stressing that financing costs are closely tied to investor confidence in fiscal stability and policy credibility. He urged continued responsible fiscal decisions to sustain this confidence and lower borrowing costs, thereby freeing resources for investment and core economic priorities.
Why it matters
Strong bond demand lowers borrowing costs, giving the government more fiscal flexibility for investments.
