Interior Minister Nuñez says curfews and protest bans will stay in many French cities
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez announced that prefects, in coordination with mayors, will keep curfews and bar demonstrations in several city centres.
Laurent Nuñez, France's interior minister, warned that prefects, working alongside municipal leaders, may prolong the curfews and protest bans imposed during recent unrest. He described the latest mobilisation as "controlled" but highlighted a significant surge in violence, citing 267 injured police officers and 150 wounded protesters. The minister affirmed that curfews will be maintained and that city-centre demonstrations will stay prohibited.
He also indicated concern about possible disturbances in the coming days. Current curfews are active in Paris, Lyon and Marseille, while protest bans have been issued in towns such as Nancy, Metz, Besançon, Belfort, Rouen, Le Havre, Toulon and Limoges, where the town hall was set on fire on the 17th.
Why it matters
The continuation of curfews and protest bans signals ongoing security tensions and limits on public assembly in France.
