Invitation to Conference of Rulers bolsters Tuanku Muhriz amid Negeri Sembilan succession dispute
Tuanku Muhriz was invited to the Oct 13-15 Conference of Rulers, a move that reinforces his position while the Negeri Sembilan succession remains contested.
Perak’s Sultan Nazrin Shah has invited Tuanku Muhriz to the Conference of Rulers set for Oct 13-15 at Istana Negara, a gesture that strengthens Muhriz’s claim to the Negeri Sembilan throne amid a heated succession dispute. The rival claimant, Tunku Nadzaruddin, proclaimed by several undang, was excluded from the meeting despite repeated requests through various rulers and Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Ismail Lasim. Muhriz indicated he will attend only the pre-council gathering on Oct 13, which the Yang di-Pertuan Agong will not attend, and will preside over the appointment of a new Jelebu undang on Oct 14, potentially aligning three of the four undang with his side.
The controversy is tied to Muhriz’s outspoken anti-corruption stance, which has drawn opposition from powerful figures, including Umno leaders backing a pardon for former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak. A palace source said Muhriz may use the Jelebu appointment to publicly address the unfolding crisis.
Why it matters
The invitation signals official backing for Muhriz, influencing a volatile royal succession that could affect Negeri Sembilan’s governance.
