Iowa Senate Candidate Josh Turek Promotes Immigrant Rights Guidance Amid Moderate Image

Senate hopeful Josh Turek, a self-described moderate, included advice for undocumented immigrants in his legislative newsletter and has repeatedly called for a simpler path to citizenship.

Democratic Senate candidate Josh Turek, an Iowa state representative since 2023, portrays himself as a "prairie populist" and a moderate appealing to voters across the spectrum. Nevertheless, his legislative newsletter featured a section titled "Know Your Rights as an Immigrant," which directed readers to the ACLU’s resources on immigrant protections. Turek has publicly urged the creation of a more accessible pathway to citizenship on at least two occasions.

While serving in the Iowa House, he backed taxpayer-funded welfare benefits for undocumented immigrants and voted to curb local law enforcement’s collaboration with ICE on deportations. He also missed a vote on verifying the citizenship status of Iowa voters, a lapse highlighted by Republican Ashley Hinson’s campaign. Additionally, Turek’s record shows he opposed several bills aimed at limiting diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives in schools and universities.

Why it matters

The candidate's immigration stance could shape voter perceptions and policy debates in a pivotal Senate race.
