Iranian navy reports oil tanker ablaze after entering prohibited Gulf of Oman zone

Iran’s navy said a non-compliant oil tanker caught fire while trying to cross a newly declared prohibited area in the Gulf of Oman.

Iranian naval surveillance teams spotted an oil tanker that had turned off its AIS transponder and attempted to navigate through a newly established prohibited zone in the Gulf of Oman, after which the ship burst into flames. Officials did not specify what triggered the blaze or who might be to blame. The prohibited area, announced by the Revolutionary Guards in September, spans sections of the Sea of Oman and the Arabian Sea along routes leading to the Strait of Hormuz.

Tehran has said that vessels breaching the zone will be subject to sanctions, without directly threatening kinetic action. The Revolutionary Guards have previously engaged vessels they accused of using unauthorized paths through the Hormuz corridor, which Iran has declared closed since the war with the United States began in February. US Central Command, overseeing the American blockade of Iranian ports, has not yet provided a statement on the fire.

Why it matters

The incident highlights rising maritime tensions and Iran’s enforcement of new navigation restrictions in a key shipping corridor.
