Iranian nuclear chief barred from attending IAEA annual meeting in Vienna

A UN sanctions committee denied Austria’s request to exempt Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization head, Eslami, from a travel ban, meaning he cannot attend the IAEA’s annual meeting in Vienna. This marks the first occasion in several years that the Iranian nuclear official will be absent from the gathering of member states overseeing nuclear compliance. Austria, which hosts the United Nations office in Vienna, has the authority to seek exemptions for sanctioned individuals to enable their participation in UN conferences, but the committee upheld the restriction.
The decision underscores the ongoing enforcement of sanctions related to Iran’s nuclear program. As a result, the IAEA meeting will proceed without Iran’s top nuclear representative.
