Israel scrambled fighter jets after Flydubai cockpit emergency, but planes landed safely
When a Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv sent distress signals, Israel launched fighter jets, though the aircraft was later controlled and landed in Saudi Arabia.
Flydubai flight FZ1073, en route from Dubai to Tel Aviv with 174 occupants, transmitted emergency signals after a co-pilot allegedly attempted a cockpit attack, causing a sharp descent. Israeli civil aviation authorities, the air force and political leadership were immediately notified, prompting the scramble of fighter jets as a precaution given the country's small size. Passengers, notably three Israelis, and Indian captain Smit Machchhar forced open the cockpit, subdued the attacker and helped restore flight control, while two additional pilots assisted.
The plane diverted to Prince Sultan Bin Abdul Aziz Airport in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely. Israeli envoy Reuven Azar said the incident might have escalated to a decision by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had the crew failed to regain control. The captain was injured but received medical care from Saudi authorities, and investigations by the UAE Attorney General and Israeli officials are ongoing to determine motive.
Why it matters
The incident shows how quickly regional tensions can trigger military alerts and highlights the role of crew bravery in averting a potential disaster.
