UAE launches criminal probe into cockpit stabbing that forced Flydubai flight to divert to Saudi Arabia

UAE prosecutors have opened a criminal investigation into a mid-air assault where a co-pilot stabbed captain Smit Machchhar on Flydubai flight FZ1073, prompting an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia.

UAE Attorney General Hamad Saif Al Shamsi announced a criminal investigation into a violent cockpit incident on Flydubai flight FZ1073, which was en route from Dubai to Tel Aviv with 174 passengers aboard. During the flight, the co-pilot stabbed captain Smit Machchhar, an Indian national, causing the plane to descend sharply and forcing a diversion to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. Despite serious injuries, Captain Machchhar unlocked the cockpit door, allowing passengers to enter and subdue the attacker, while a second crew member took control of the aircraft.

The aircraft landed safely, and the captain is receiving treatment in Saudi Arabia before being airlifted to Dubai. Prosecutors will determine the motive and whether the assault had terrorist connections, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed Israel will assist in interrogating the suspect. The case highlights concerns over aviation security on international routes.

Why it matters

The incident raises serious aviation security concerns and involves cross-border cooperation on a potential terrorist act.
