Jio executive says India could deliver ultra-low-cost AI to all within five to seven years
Rajeev Saluja, vice-president of 5G Radio at Reliance Jio, said the company aims to cut AI inference costs so that affordable AI becomes available to every Indian in five to seven years.
At a discussion hosted by India Mobile Congress, Rajeev Saluja, Jio's vice-president for 5G Radio, described the company's plan to make artificial intelligence affordable for the entire Indian population within a five-to-seven-year horizon. The approach focuses on slashing inference costs by optimizing three dimensions: cost per rupee, energy consumption per watt, and processing speed per one outlet unit. Saluja argued that achieving these efficiencies could enable India to transition from a historic software exporter to a leading AI-agent exporter.
He emphasized that a viable return on investment is essential for widespread AI uptake and pointed to rising interest from rural markets. Jio is investing heavily in AI as a core growth pillar ahead of a potential large IPO.
Why it matters
Lower AI costs could broaden digital access in India and boost the country's role in the global AI market.
