Judge orders Defence Ministry to disclose any Moroccan naval activity near Ceuta

Judge María Tardón has asked the Defence Ministry to confirm whether Moroccan warships entered Spanish waters around Ceuta during the migration surge.

Judge María Tardón, overseeing the probe into the Ceuta invasion, has formally requested that the Defence Ministry provide information on whether any Moroccan Navy ships entered Spanish territorial waters near Ceuta from the day before the migration wave began until ten days later. She asks for specifics on dates and time slots of any such entries, as well as confirmation of their nature—whether entry, stay, transit, or mere presence.

The ministry, headed by Margarita Robles, is expected to supply this data. While the political group Iustitia Europa urged an investigation into possible Moroccan naval involvement, the judge rejected some of their broader demands, such as EU or Frontex cooperation, emphasizing the need for factual verification. Existing intelligence reports from the CNI and the National Police suggest Moroccan authorities were passive during the influx of roughly 72,000 migrants, but they do not indicate any naval participation in organizing or executing the event.

Why it matters

Clarifying any foreign naval activity is crucial for understanding the dynamics of the Ceuta migration crisis and Spain's security response.

How the sides frame it

Both camps report the judge's order for the Defence Ministry to provide details on any Moroccan naval activity near Ceuta and note her rejection of broader demands, though the right-leaning coverage adds emphasis on factual verification and mentions the ministry head.

CENTER

Covers the judge's request for information on possible Moroccan warship presence and notes her rejection of Iustitia's broader demands.

RIGHT

Frames the request as a factual verification effort, highlighting the ministry's role and the judge's dismissal of wider EU/Frontex involvement.

The right emphasises

  • exige al Ministerio de Defensa datos precisos sobre la actividad naval marroquí
  • subraya la necesidad de verificación factual
  • descarta demandas de cooperación con la UE o Frontex
