Junts says Carles Puigdemont's return to Catalonia will be decided by the former president

Junts announced it will let Carles Puigdemont determine the timing of his comeback to Catalonia, after recent court rulings lifted his detention orders.

Junts confirmed that it will defer all decisions about Carles Puigdemont's return to Catalonia to the former president, refusing to set a specific timetable. Jordi Turull, the party's secretary general, described the recent Constitutional Court judgment as a victory over repression of the independence movement. The court corrected the Supreme Court's reading of the amnesty law and ordered its application, while magistrate Pablo Llarena annulled the arrest warrants for Puigdemont, Lluís Puig and Toni Comín. After nine years in Belgium, Puigdemont could appear in Girona or Barcelona within days, yet his advisers aim to wait for the full closure of the 1-O case and the enactment of amnesty.

The party celebrated the rulings with a cava toast, attended by figures such as Miriam Nogueras, Jordi Martí and other senior members. Puigdemont plans to tour Catalonia to gauge public sentiment before making any further political moves, which could align with the upcoming election campaign.

Why it matters

The decision could reshape Catalan politics by bringing a prominent independence leader back into the regional arena.
