Justice Minister expands probe into early withdrawals from contested investment funds

Justice Minister Akın Gürlek announced that investigators are focusing on investors who left disputed funds between Sept. 13-16, suspecting they acted on insider tips.

Justice Minister Akın Gürlek said the investigation into disputed investment funds has been widened to examine withdrawals made between Sept. 13 and Sept. 16, which authorities believe were based on prior knowledge. Financial analysis uncovered 214 beneficiaries—141 private investors and 73 companies—who generated a total of 187.65 billion Turkish liras in gains across TERA, Pusula and Hedef funds. The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office compiled the list and submitted it to the Savings Deposit Insurance Fund (TMSF), which has begun sending formal notices demanding the return of the profits via voluntary repayment accounts. The probe suggests that the early exits were coordinated with insider information, prompting legal scrutiny and potential recovery of the funds.

Why it matters

Recovering the profits could protect investors and deter insider trading in Turkey's financial markets.
