Kapil Sibal accuses CEC Gyanesh Kumar of unilateral SIR decisions and seeks removal

During a parliamentary session, Kapil Sibal accused chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar of bypassing the three-member Election Commission by issuing decisions unilaterally in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise. He referenced an internal statement that acknowledged a lack of unanimity and pointed to objections filed by commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi concerning electoral-roll modifications, IT system changes, and the SIR process.

Sibal argued that elections held in Bihar in June 2025 and West Bengal in April were therefore illegal and called for the Supreme Court to examine the Commission’s records, dissent notes, and orders, and to consider annulling those polls. He also demanded that an FIR be lodged against Seima Khanna, who manages the ECINET platform, asserting she lacks statutory immunity. The Election Commission responded by announcing a review committee with an independent IIT/IIIT expert, confirming that certain Form 6 changes were upheld by the Supreme Court, and pledging to circulate agendas and minutes for future meetings.
