Kenya confirms second Ebola infection linked to first case

A 39-year-old Kenyan man, related to the country’s first Ebola patient, has become the second confirmed case, prompting new contact-tracing efforts.

Kenya’s Ministry of Health announced a second Ebola infection, this time a 39-year-old man related to the nation’s first patient, who fell ill while already in quarantine. The initial case, a Kenyan citizen, acquired the virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo and died earlier this month. Authorities had previously identified 128 individuals who had been exposed to the first patient; 108 are still under quarantine, five have left the country, and 15 remain unlocated.

Contact tracing for the new case has now commenced. A World Health Organization representative emphasized that, despite the two confirmed infections, there is no sign of an Ebola outbreak spreading within Kenya. The epidemic continues to ravage the Congo, with over 9,000 cases and more than 4,000 deaths reported.

Why it matters

The new case raises concerns about Ebola spread and underscores the need for vigilant monitoring and quarantine measures.
