Kim Aris pushes global pressure for Aung San Suu Kyi's release amid Myanmar turmoil

Kim Aris has been spearheading an international drive to obtain the release of his mother, Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, ever since the military ousted her government in early 2021. A recent Red Cross meeting, prompted by Aris’s Proof of Life campaign, did little to allay fears about her health, and observers question whether the encounter was staged. The conflict in Myanmar, now a full-scale civil war involving the exiled National Unity Government and a coalition of ethnic armed organizations, has already killed more than 100,000 people.

Aris condemned President Min Aung Hlaing’s recent diplomatic tour and the one-sided elections held in January, describing them as a “parody of democracy” that may be more perilous than outright dictatorship. He warned that such a façade allows both domestic opponents and foreign governments to remain passive. Additionally, Aris highlighted the formation of the Steering Council for the Emergence of a Federal Democratic Union, which unites the NUG, key ethnic groups, and parliamentary bodies as a step toward a genuine federal system.
