Klang Valley to roll out cashless fare system on rail in 30 months, buses in 15

Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced that the open payment system will be deployed across Prasarana’s rail network within 30 months and its bus services within 15 months after the procurement process is completed.

In a parliamentary session, Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced that the open payment system for public transport in the Klang Valley is entering the last phase of procurement, with a decision slated for the end of the year. After the contract is awarded, implementation will proceed in stages: within the first twelve months, 30 % of Rapid KL rail stations will support open payments, and full integration across the entire rail network is targeted for completion within thirty months.

Rapid Bus services are expected to be fully equipped for cashless fares within fifteen months of project start. The platform will accommodate domestic MyDebit cards, major international credit and debit cards, NFC-enabled devices, and popular e-wallets such as Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay and Alipay, as well as QR-code tickets and Touch ’n Go cards, and will later cover Prasarana’s Penang network. Loke also noted that Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd has already deployed an open payment system for its Klang Valley routes since 1 November 2024, using similar payment options and automated gates. The rollout aims to modernise fare collection and provide commuters with more convenient, cash-free options.

Why it matters

It expands cashless fare options, simplifying travel for millions of commuters in Malaysia’s largest transit region.
