Labour MP criticised for disparaging remarks about Glasgow schools

Labour MP Blair McDougall launched a petition urging constituents in affluent East Renfrewshire to reject a Scottish Government proposal to merge their council with Glasgow, claiming the merger would place their schools under the control of a failing Glasgow City Council. His remarks were swiftly condemned by SNP councillor Mhairi Hunter, who described them as "vile and deeply ignorant" and pointed out Glasgow’s strong teaching staff and recent gains in academic performance.

Hunter emphasized that Glasgow faces far higher child-poverty levels, which present distinct challenges for its schools. Official figures indicate that Glasgow’s attainment rates have improved, and the attainment gap is narrowing. A council spokeswoman praised Glasgow teachers for helping more pupils progress to further education, training or employment. The SNP chose not to respond, and the Scottish Government was not quoted.
