Scottish Labour leader says Prime Minister prioritises Scotland amid independence debate

In a radio interview, new Scottish Labour leader Michael Marra asserted that the Prime Minister regards Scotland as an “absolute priority” and rejected claims that his remarks on independence were misrepresented. Marra explained that the Prime Minister’s recent comments comparing Scotland’s referendum prospects to Northern Ireland’s were taken out of context, and he clarified that a second Scottish referendum remains “off limits.”

He defended the Prime Minister’s decision not to attend the Labour conference’s “Scotland night,” citing urgent business and confidence in the leader’s priorities after a direct conversation. Marry also warned that the SNP should concentrate on the cost-of-living crisis and public-service reform before pursuing another referendum, noting public opinion is split on the constitutional question. He highlighted that the SNP’s recent motion on the right to choose was a “gotcha” tactic, while reaffirming the right to future votes. Finally, Marra said he is still getting to know the Prime Minister but will keep Scotland’s interests at the forefront of any discussions.
