Landslide near Chumchet likely sparked flash floods along Budhi Gandaki
A recent landslide near Chumchet in Gorkha district may have blocked a tributary, triggering flash flooding in the Budhi Gandaki river and raising flood warnings downstream.
Experts from the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology’s Flood Forecasting Section identified a substantial landslide near Chumchet in Chumnubri Rural Municipality, Gorkha district, using satellite images. The slide appears to have occurred on Saturday and may have blocked the Ungeling tributary of the Budhi Gandaki, leading to a sudden release of water that caused flash flooding. While locals have speculated about an avalanche on Mount Shringi, officials consider that hypothesis unconfirmed.
River flow continues to fluctuate, with the Trishuli river staying above the danger level and posing a high flood risk as far downstream as Benighat. Authorities have advised communities along the riverbanks, especially around Mugling and further downstream in Chitwan and Nawalparasi districts, to remain vigilant.
Why it matters
The event raises flood danger for thousands of residents along major rivers in central Nepal.
