Sudden river surge in Gorkha washes away seven homes and forces evacuations

A rapid rise in the Budhi Gandaki river in northern Gorkha swept seven houses from the riverbed, prompting residents and tourists to flee.

A sudden increase in flow on the Budhi Gandaki river in northern Gorkha caused five to seven houses in the village of Jagat to be swept away on Sunday morning. Preliminary information points to a landslide above Siuribas in Chumnubri Rural Municipality as the trigger. Although no casualties have been confirmed, residents of Chumnubri Rural Municipality-6 and -7, as well as tourists staying in nearby hotels, abandoned their homes as water levels rose.

Witnesses reported loud roaring sounds around 4 am, suggesting a blockage or landslide despite the absence of rain. The Area Police Office in Arughat issued safety warnings, and officials used loudspeakers to direct people to safer locations.
