Lawyer Hassan urges respect for counsel after Kamal Hisham faces online attacks
Lawyer Hassan defended the right of attorney Kamal Hisham to legal representation and condemned social-media attacks, while noting Shuhaily's not-guilty plea to injuring two police officers at KLIA.
In a public statement, lawyer Hassan emphasized that the professional duties of Kamal Hisham must be upheld, arguing that even individuals accused of grave offenses deserve legal counsel. He criticized the wave of social-media attacks against Kamal, which portrayed the lawyer as lacking integrity. Hassan referenced a prior matter where Kamal, after nearly two years in remand, pleaded guilty to the least serious charge under the Companies Act and was fined RM30,000, following Hassan's counsel to consider the length of detention and family circumstances.
He reiterated that confidentiality between a lawyer and client is legally protected and urged the Majlis Peguam to safeguard lawyers from unfair media scrutiny. The statement also mentioned that Shuhaily entered a not-guilty plea to two charges of deliberately causing injury to police officers at Kuala Lumpur International Airport's Terminal 1 on 28 September, charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code, facing up to one year imprisonment, fines up to RM2,000 per count, and was released on RM3,000 bail with the next court date set for 25 November.
