Leaders We Deserve backs 31-year-old challenger against embattled Rep. Jimmy Gomez

Leaders We Deserve, the political group created by former student-activist David Hogg, has thrown its support behind Angela Gonzales-Torres, a 31-year-old candidate challenging Rep. Jimmy Gomez in the upcoming Democratic primary. Gomez, a California congressman, is currently the subject of a House Ethics Committee investigation after allegations of sexual assault surfaced; he maintains that any sexual activity was consensual.

Hogg described Gomez as an “establishment” figure whose alleged misconduct diverts attention from Democratic priorities. The endorsement reflects Leaders We Deserve’s broader strategy of backing younger, less-established politicians. Hogg, who previously served as a vice chair of the Democratic National Committee, has clashed with DNC Chair Ken Martin over the group’s plan to target incumbents.
