Left-wing vote coordination could shift seats from PP and Vox in key provinces

A joint PSOE-Frente Amplio list would add about 20 seats compared with the 2023 results, taking seats from PP, Vox and several regional parties in smaller constituencies.

With the left's prospects looking poor in upcoming general elections, PSOE and Frente Amplio are planning coordinated candidacies in certain districts to boost their parliamentary representation. If the two parties ran together everywhere, the combined vote would translate into 172 seats, a gain of 20 over their separate 2023 totals of 121 and 31 seats respectively. This scenario would cost the Partido Popular twelve seats, Vox four, and also reduce the tally of regional parties like the PNV, Junts and BNG.

While a full-scale joint list for the Congress is not on the table, the parties have already decided to skip the Teruel province to prevent vote dilution, and similar arrangements are being discussed for other small constituencies where the electoral system penalises minor parties. A parliamentary pact with ERC alone would be enough to form a left-wing majority in the lower house.

Why it matters

Seat-sharing could reshape Spain's parliamentary balance, weakening the main right-wing parties.
