Lidl outpaces rivals, expanding UK market share as Aldi stalls

Lidl has become the only UK grocer posting growth, raising its market share to 8.6% while Aldi’s share slipped slightly.

According to Worldpanel, Lidl’s share of the UK grocery market rose to 8.6% in the 12 weeks to October, making it the sole supermarket with a growing footprint. Sales increased by 7.1% compared with the same period last year, helped by strong performance in fruit, vegetables, wine and other fresh categories. About 54% of households shopped at Lidl during that time, and its Lidl Plus app saw a notable rise in users, reinforcing customer loyalty.

The retailer announced plans to add 50 new stores within the next year. Meanwhile, Aldi’s market share slipped modestly and its chief executive, Giles Hurley, accused competitors of inflating perceived savings through loyalty pricing. Other major chains such as Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Asda all saw slight declines in share.

Why it matters
