Life Inside Slovjansk's Death Zone: Constant Drone Threats and Collapsed Services
A first-hand account shows Slovjansk transformed into a lethal “death zone” where drones buzz overhead, utilities fail and only a handful of civilians remain.
Driving from Barvinkov toward Slovjansk, the author observed a 46th air assault brigade unit preparing to fire as low-cost Russian Molnija drones hovered above supply routes, capable of striking Ukrainian forces. Once a city where hotels offered water, electricity and stable internet, Slovjansk now lies within a 15-kilometre “death zone” where infrastructure is crippled and drone-protected tunnels dominate movement. Burned-out vehicles, including an ambulance, litter the streets, while only a few senior civilians occupy a high-rise building, sleeping in a former children’s room.
Nighttime brings a chorus of buzzing FPV drones, occasional mortar impacts and the occasional close-range glide-bomb that rattles windows. Despite the chaos, some shops, cafés and even a pet store stay open, serving soldiers and the remaining locals who must also feed stray animals left behind by evacuees. The narrative underscores how the war has turned everyday life into a constant survival exercise under an ever-present aerial threat.
