Russian ministry says it seized two Zaporizhzhia villages, cites heavy Ukrainian losses and equipment destruction

The Russian defence ministry reported that its forces captured the villages of Cservonij Jar and Juljivka in Zaporizhzhia, claiming more than 1,180 Ukrainian soldiers were killed or seriously injured and listing a range of destroyed military assets.

The Russian defence ministry announced on Wednesday that its forces had seized the settlements of Cservonij Jar and Juljivka in the Zaporizhzhia region, asserting progress on all six Ukrainian frontlines. It claimed Ukrainian losses exceed 1,180 killed or seriously wounded and enumerated destroyed targets, including a tank, 17 armoured fighting vehicles, two HIMARS rockets, numerous UAVs and facilities used for military transport, energy, and long-range drone production.

The statement cited attacks from several Russian regions using artillery and unmanned aerial systems. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov agreed with former US President Donald Trump that Ukraine could have secured a more favourable peace settlement earlier, adding that the situation on the ground is worsening and that President Vladimir Putin is willing to explore diplomatic options. Foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zaharova described Ukraine's deployment of Japanese-made drones from Terra Drone Corporation as a hostile act and hinted at hard retaliatory measures affecting areas sensitive to Tokyo.

Why it matters

The claim marks a new territorial gain for Russia and highlights escalating casualties and foreign involvement in the Ukraine conflict.
