Louis Aliot rebuffs Richard Ferrand's warning over RN's referendum plan
RN mayor Louis Aliot dismissed Richard Ferrand's criticism of Marine Le Pen's proposal to use a referendum under article 11 to amend the constitution.
During a recent podcast, Louis Aliot, the RN mayor of Perpignan, responded sharply to Richard Ferrand's admonition that the party should keep a neutral stance and respect constitutional norms when proposing reforms. Ferrand, who heads the Constitutional Council, reminded that only article 89 governs constitutional amendments, not article 11, which the RN intends to use for a referendum on its migration agenda. Aliot argued that the people are the sole sovereign and pointed to Charles de Gaulle's 1962 referendum as a legitimate precedent, while also questioning Ferrand's authority on constitutional matters.
He dismissed Ferrand's comments as lacking scientific basis. The discussion also mentioned that Les Républicains leader Bruno Retailleau is planning a broader constitutional overhaul through the proper article 89 route.
