Madrid government files hate-crime complaint over threats and vandalism at Sol camp

The Community of Madrid has lodged a formal complaint with the Madrid Provincial Prosecutor alleging hate-based threats, insults and vandalism directed at President Isabel Díaz Ayuso during the illegal encampment at Puerta del Sol.

The Community of Madrid submitted a criminal complaint to the Madrid Provincial Prosecutor alleging that participants in the illegal encampment at Puerta del Sol have issued threats, insults and hate-filled chants aimed at President Isabel Díaz Ayuso. The filing includes photographs of banners and graffiti that call for her death and the burning of her residence. It also documents vandalism of cultural assets such as the Oso y el Madroño monument, the Real Casa de Correos façade and the equestrian statue of Carlos III, as well as damage to street lighting, kiosks and pavement.

Legal counsel from the Abogacía General of the region says the conduct may meet the criteria for threats, serious public defamation, hate crimes and various property-damage offenses under the Spanish Penal Code. The complaint asks the prosecutor to secure video recordings from nearby cameras, collect police intervention reports and identify any individuals involved. The move signals a push for a thorough investigation and possible criminal liability for those responsible.

Why it matters

It shows how regional authorities are using legal tools to address political protest that crosses into hate speech and heritage damage.
