Madrid streets fill with housing protest after parliamentary defeat and decree repeal
A housing rally organized by the Sindicato de Inquilinas and allied groups marched toward Plaza de Cibeles in Madrid on Saturday, following the parliamentary loss of Pedro Sánchez’s government and the repeal of two housing decrees.
In response to the recent parliamentary defeat of Pedro Sánchez and the annulment of two housing decrees, the Sindicato de Inquilinas and other collectives organized a march toward Plaza de Cibeles in Madrid. The rally started at 12:00 p.m., with four columns assembling at Emilio Castelar, Atocha, the Hospital de la Princesa and Plaza de España, and was bolstered by participants from the Sol encampment. PSOE spokesperson Montse Mínguez said the party remains willing to negotiate, while Sumar and En Comú leader Aina Vidal urged the reinstatement of the revoked housing and rental measures.
CEOE president Antonio Garamendi expressed respect for the protests but warned that a general strike would be illegal. Parallel demonstrations were planned in cities such as Valencia, Guadalajara, León, Cádiz, Santander and Gerona.
