Spanish unions weigh nationwide strike over threatened housing reforms
Major labor unions in Spain are considering a general strike or coordinated work stoppages if the right-wing Congress rejects new housing decrees.
Tenant activists and the Sol assembly in the capital have urged a nationwide mobilization to defend housing rights, suggesting that protests could move from the streets to factories and offices. The two largest unions, Comisiones Obreras (CCOO) and UGT, are weighing options ranging from partial work stoppages to a full-day general strike should the conservative majority overturn the housing decrees in Congress. Smaller syndicates, including the anarcho-syndicalist CGT, have announced readiness to call a 24-hour strike, echoing the Tenant Union’s demand, and CNT is also considering backing the action.
On Friday, a large crowd surrounded the Congress of Deputies while lawmakers debated the measures, chanting “general strike.” Union leaders such as Unai Sordo and Pepe Álvarez stress that any labour-focused action would also address broader issues like wage adequacy and precarious employment.
Why it matters
A strike could pressure the government and affect millions of workers facing rising rents and insecure jobs.
