Maharashtra government lets Mumbai police manage large CJP rally peacefully

A protest by the Cockroach Janta Party at Shivaji Park drew up to 10,000 participants, and Mumbai police handled it without force, earning praise from the protest leader.

The Cockroach Janta Party organized a demonstration at Mumbai's Shivaji Park, attracting an estimated 9,000 to 10,000 people despite lacking official permission. Maharashtra authorities adopted a non-confrontational stance, granting the police full discretion to maintain order without using force. Approximately 1,000 to 1,500 officers, including reserve units, were deployed to block entry to the park and manage traffic, keeping the assembly on adjacent roads.

Protest leader Abhijeet Dipke lauded the Mumbai police as the country's best, noting the calm atmosphere compared with a recent Delhi protest. While BJP ministers Ashish Shelar and others denounced the CJP's tactics, the state government refrained from imposing extra restrictions, mindful of ongoing drought concerns and other local demonstrations.

Why it matters

The handling shows how state authorities balance protest rights with public order amid multiple regional tensions.
