Shivaji Park resident files police complaint against illegal CJP protest

Advocate Siddhi Deolekar lodged a complaint with Mumbai Police accusing Cockroach Janta Party leaders of holding an unauthorised protest at Shivaji Park against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Advocate Siddhi Deolekar, who has lived in Shivaji Park for a decade, filed a formal complaint with Mumbai Police on Friday, alleging that Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) leaders staged an illegal demonstration at the park targeting Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. She cited a Bombay High Court order that the police had referenced when refusing permission, emphasizing that protests should occur at approved venues like Azad Maidan or Delhi's Jantar Mantar.

Deolekar expressed gratitude to the police for promptly responding to residents’ safety concerns and urged authorities to take action against the CJP founders, including Ajinkya Shinde, who received a denial letter from Shivaji Park Police Station. CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke described the event as the opening of a nationwide agitation, demanding greater accountability from the Election Commission, while police highlighted potential noise pollution and traffic disruption.

Parallel protests are underway in Delhi, where student activists and AAP leaders have gathered at Jantar Mantar, leading to the detention of over 500 demonstrators, including Atishi and Sanjay Singh. The episode underscores tensions between civic protest rights and municipal regulations.

Why it matters

It highlights the clash between citizens' right to protest and local authorities' enforcement of court-ordered permissions.
